9th GABRIEL network meeting group

The 2017 meeting, attended by 85 participants from 22 countries, began with a symposium on flavivirus diagnostics, advances and challenges. Flaviviral infections, such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya, are becoming a growing global public health concern. The symposium looked at the gaps and pitfalls that may hamper accurate and effective diagnosis and discussed a knowledge-sharing platform where improved surveillance strategies and clinical management could be addressed.

Other meeting highlights included presentations covering:

  • Diagnostic innovations and patient management
  • Tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases
  • Acute respiratory infections
  • Other research initiatives within the GABRIEL Network
  • The Quality Initiative
  • The third edition of the Young Scientist Award, with presentations and an awards ceremony

Last but not least, 2 new GABRIEL members were welcomed: the Laboratoire Microbiologie Santé et Environnement of the Université libanaise in Tripoli, Lebanon (specializing in tuberculosis, respiratory infections and AMR), and the Bangladesh Institute for Tropical and Infectious Diseases, located in Chittagong and specialized in tuberculosis and enteric infections.

The network now has a total of 20 members in 16 countries.
