Considering the importance of prevalent tropical and infectious diseases and emerging illness the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh took an initiative to set up a dedicated institute on Tropical and Infectious Diseases at Chittagong in the premise of infectious disease at Fauzdarhat, Chittagong.
Organization
Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory (RML) is part of BITID and it was inaugurated on April 2015. The laboratory has a state-of-the-art facility of 250m2, which includes a Biosafety Level 2(BSL2) & Biosafety Level 3(BSL3) microbiology laboratory in conjunction with a general biochemistry laboratory and a molecular biology laboratory. The main idea behind constructing the lab was to make it as a reference laboratory for the whole country. It also provides laboratory service to indoor and outdoor patients of BITID as well as patients coming from community and other institutions.
Mission
The BITID is conducting different research activities on COVID-19, AMR, Dengue, HIV.
Its mission is to:
- Provide patients with quality diagnosis for improved care
- Contribute to training students in clinical biology & infectious diseases
- Conduct projects that address public health issues in Bangladesh
